Money vs Love
Orientation
September 9, 2009

The Beatles were fun, and they were innovative. Paul McCartney was one of the most talented bassists to walk this side of Abbey Road. ‘Imagine’, one of the most relevant and meaningful songs ever created, could only come from John who had the widest, deepest vision. Overall, the band always kept things interesting. They staged a surprise rooftop concert. They fought Blue Meanies in a paradise under the sea.

But sometimes, the messages in their songs seem inconsistent. They even left us with a million-dollar question: what’s more important, love or money?

In 1963, the Fab Four unleashed their inner gangster with ‘Money’. They didn’t write it, but they sang it with so much conviction it could’ve made it to the Get Rich or Die Tryin’ album. Four years later, they crossed over to the mushy side with ‘All You Need is Love’. That time around, they told us the thing that ‘don’t pay my bill’ is what really matters.

Look at how opposite these two songs are:

Paul McCartney had more girlfriends than his mates combined. John was so enamored with Yoko, he gave up the band to be with her

MONEY

The best things in life are free
But you can keep it for the birds and the bees
Now give me money (that’s what I want)

Your lovin’ gives me a thrill
But your lovin’ don’t pay my bill
Now give me money (that’s what I want)

Money don’t get everything, it’s true
What it don’t get I can’t use
Now give me money (that’s what I want)

ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE

There’s nothing you can do that can’t be done
Nothing you can sing that can’t be sung
Nothing you can say but you can learn how to
play the game
It’s easy

There’s nothing you can make that can’t be made
No one you can save that can’t be saved
Nothing you can do but you can learn how to be
you in time
It’s easy

All you need is love, all you need is love
All you need is love, love is all you need

Lyrically, Money is the better-penned song. Does that make it the superior song? Heck no. All You Need is Love has better tunes, better harmonies, and a more evocative character. It even has those sweet little George Harrison chops. It’s the hands-down winner.

Even The Beatles seem to agree. In fact, they took All You Need is Love a little too seriously. George married twice. Paul had more girlfriends than his mates combined. John was so enamored with Yoko, he gave up the band to be with her.
